The Special Olympics Massachusetts Summer Games follow a number of regional competitions in several cities and towns across the state that lead up to this flagship event. This year's Summer Games will be Friday, June 18th - Sunday, June 20th. The summer season gives athletes the chance to showcase their talents in: athletics (track and field events), aquatics, power lifting, tennis, volleyball, gymnastics and roller-skating. Over 2,200 athletes compete and 1,200 volunteers are tapped to be at Harvard University’s athletic complex the weekend of Father’s Day to enjoy elite competitions. The weekend kicks off Friday evening with the traditional Opening Ceremony events featuring: the Parade of Athletes, the lighting of the cauldron and other entertainment. The Healthy Athletes program also takes center stage at Summer Games during the weekend as hundreds of Special Olympics athletes have the opportunity to be screened in a variety of health issues including dental and vision as well as others including Fit Feet, hearing and nutrition.
