Colin Davidson

Colin Davidson takes the PlungeColin Davidson is one accomplished athlete. With seven sports under his belt, countless medals in those sports and a couple trips to national competitions, he’s also a proud Special Olympics athlete. Colin has stated that he is very fortunate to have an organization like Special Olympics in his life and that it’s played a major role in his life, his health and that of his family.

His favorite sport according to him is soccer. That’s to sport he started in when introduced to Special Olympics and it’s been his favorite ever since he was in middle school. Now in his early twenties, he’s taken up other sports and honed his golf skills, enough to earn him a spot at the 2009 National Golf Invitational for Special Olympics held in Nebraska.

He’s often seen taking charge of the court in basketball at the annual Winter Games held in Worcester and this year will be no different as he gets ready for another Winter Games being held March 13 and 14 in and around Central Mass. However, before he gets to Winter Games, he’s got one very important goal in mind; raising money for Special Olympics MA while he jumps into the icy-cold Atlantic Ocean at the annual Passion Plunge on March 6. He’s been a top fundraiser for a few years and this year is looking real good for him. He’ll join others on his team as they try to raise money for the program.

While Colin does put his time in to train and compete in the sports he loves, he also has seen tremendous other benefits by his association with Special Olympics. Colin drives his own car which he worked for and paid for himself. He works at Stop & Shop and has held his job for some time now. Colin and his mother also admit that Colin’s health and his awareness about personal health issues have increased. Through the Healthy Athletes Program, Colin has become much more aware of nutrition, exercise and other issues such as dental care and his eyesight.

Colin is also an accomplished public speaker having spoken to countless groups about the benefits of Special Olympics. As a Special Olympics Global Messenger, Colin has trained to speak to groups and the media about his experiences with the organization.  He’s no stranger to a TV camera and does very well telling people about what Special Olympics has done for his life.

This summer, Colin will join nearly 60 Special Olympics Massachusetts athletes in Lincoln, Nebraska at the 2010 Special Olympics USA National Games. Colin will compete in soccer with his fellow Shrewsbury Parks Teammates. SOMA athletes will join over 3,000 of their peers selected for superior abilities in their disciplines, July 18. Good Luck Colin!
